Hi, I’m Kevin Brittain, Runpreneur on a mission to run 40,075 km, go beyond Day 4,292, and raise £1,000,000 for children’s causes—one barefoot step and honest blog at a time.
But today’s post isn’t just about running marathons—it’s about dodging emotional landmines in your entrepreneurial journey. Why? Because conflict is inevitable, but destruction is optional.
Let me share what happened recently:
During a crucial meeting with my business partners, our conversation started to heat up. Misunderstandings, frayed nerves, raised voices—the works. We were close to an impasse and, honestly, it could have ended in a total disaster.
But something powerful happened…
One partner had another appointment and called for a break: “Let’s reconvene in a couple of hours.” We all stepped away.
The Miracle of Hitting Pause
Walking away wasn’t running. It was tactical. In those two hours, the emotional chimp in my brain (thanks, Dr Steve Peters, for The Chimp Paradox) calmed down. By the time we met again, the growling had faded, clarity set in, and—within 15 minutes—we found an amicable solution we ALL supported.
WITHOUT that breather? I honestly believe we might have walked away from our business entirely.
The Psychology (Why This Works)
When you’re agitated, your emotional mind is calling the shots—irrational, reactive, self-defensive. If you barge ahead, things will just escalate. But by stepping back—even just a few minutes—you allow your rational mind to catch up. You process, reflect, gain perspective, and return with solutions, not problems.

How to Use This TODAY – In Business & Life
Spot the signs: Are you clenching your fists, raising your voice, or getting defensive? Time to pause.
Don’t be afraid to call a break: “Let’s each take a moment and reconnect in [10 mins/an hour/tomorrow].”
Use the pause: Walk, breathe, reset. Let the logical part of your brain take charge before returning.
Watch what happens: Solutions emerge, not problems. You’ll resolve disputes faster, build trust, and keep your mission alive.
Why This Matters For the Runpreneur Mission
Every day, I run. Every day, I vlog. Some days, the real marathon is staying calm in tough conversations, so I can keep going strong for the dream: 40,075 km. Beyond Day 4,292. £1,000,000 to save children’s lives.
And YOU are part of that journey—every read, share, and donation counts.
