Ever feel like life’s piling on the bad days? What if I told you most of them aren’t as grim as you think—and I can prove it in less than five minutes a day?
Welcome back to the Runpreneur journey! I’m Kevin Brittain, the man on a mission to run 40,075 km—enough to lap the planet—and raise £1,000,000 for children’s causes. Today, I’m sharing the mental hack that’s kept me pushing forward through over 1,800 consecutive days of running, fundraising, and facing life’s rollercoaster. If you’re searching for more positive days, a boost to your mental health, or just a logical way to track whether today really was “bad”, this is going to change your perspective.
Why Scoring My Days Saved My Sanity
Let’s face it—when you’re grinding away at a huge mission (and believe me, running a marathon every single day while starting a business qualifies as extreme), it’s easy to feel like you’re hitting wall after wall. I found myself thinking, are all these days really so tough, or am I just focusing on what went wrong? Sound familiar?
The Truth: We’re Wired For Negativity
We all have a habit of letting one bad moment—or even a minor setback—colour our whole day. But what about everything that went right? I realised I needed a simple, logical way to reflect on each day, without letting my emotions take the wheel. That’s how I created my “Day Scoring” method.
The 5-Minute Day Scoring Hack
Here’s how it works—I challenge you to try this tonight:
At the end of the day, pause.
List everything that went well (big or small—maybe a positive email, a good meeting, or just a laugh with family).
List what didn’t go so well (again, big or small: possibly a missed response, a problem at work, or anything negative).
Count your positives and negatives.
Net them out:
More positives? That’s a GOOD DAY.
More negatives? Okay, it’s a not-so-good day.
Even? You’ve landed in the average zone.
That’s it. Five minutes, tops. No spreadsheets, no journals (unless you want to!), just pure, pragmatic reflection.
A Real Example – The Surprising Outcome
Last Friday, I felt gutted by a bad bit of news at the end of my day. Left me convinced it was a total write-off. But when I tallied it up—positives like a great team meeting, new partnership opportunities, even my son’s football team winning—suddenly the score told a different storey. It was actually a plus seven day!
Why This Matters for YOU (And Your Mindset)
We humans love to dwell on the negative. But when you see the actual score, you can override that instinct, protect your mental health, and—most importantly—spot patterns if things genuinely aren’t going right. If you’re getting loads of negative days, look for the two or three big things dragging you down and focus there.
With this method, not only do you gain clarity, but over time you’ll probably spot you have far more good days than you thought—which puts you in the right frame of mind to tackle bigger challenges (like running around the world… barefoot!).
