If you are on a running streak, meaning you run every single day, no matter what, it is easy to become a slave to the schedule. I am currently on Day 1932 of my mission, and if there is one thing I’ve learnt from my diary, it’s that you shouldn't miss out on things in life just because you are a runner. You shouldn't sacrifice experiences; instead, you should work your running plans around your life.
That includes socialising. If you want to have fun with friends and family, you absolutely should. And if that means consuming alcohol, then you should do so without guilt, but you have to be smart about it. When you do consume alcohol, there are a few "tricks of the trade" you can use to ensure you don’t end up in such a state that you physically can’t get out and run the next day.
My primary strategy is simple: hydration. Ensure you are hydrated before you go out, drink plenty of water while you are out (ideally between alcoholic drinks), and have more before you go to bed. Hydration is the key to maintaining the consistency required for a long-term goal like mine.
I am running 40,075km, a full lap of the world, to raise £1M for children’s causes. With a vision to maintain this barefoot-style streak for over 16.5 years, I’ve had to learn how to integrate the mission into a real, lived life. It isn't about being perfect; it's about being prepared so the streak is never jeopardised.
