Running in Galera, Spain: Discovering the Beauty Beyond the Tourist Trails

As I wrap up my summer holiday in Galera, just an hour north of Granada in southern Spain, I can't help but reflect on how truly breathtaking it’s been to run through this region. Each morning, I’ve been surrounded by mountain ranges, scenic farming terrains filled with olive and fruit trees, and the most stunning sunsets casting vivid colours over the landscape.

It’s a world away from the usual touristy spots people often flock to in Spain. Here in Galera, life feels slower and more relaxed,a perfect escape for anyone craving authenticity and tranquillity.

Running at an altitude of around 800 to 1,000 metres above sea level, I can definitely feel a difference in the air. The terrain is hilly and the elevation can be a real test compared to the flat landscapes I’m used to in East Anglia back home. My regular routes in Galera varied between 7.2 and 7.5 kilometres, often including a challenging 160 metres of elevation! While that’s hard work, the surrounding scenery never fails to make every step worthwhile.

What stood out most to me was how safe and enjoyable the local farm roads are for running. Unlike the pure trail running I did recently in Vejer de la Frontera, here you get a mix of beautiful views and solid, runnable roads, perfect for both trail lovers and those who prefer more traditional routes.

Beyond the running itself, I’ve grown to appreciate the easy-going lifestyle. The locals are welcoming, and their work-life balance is admirable, siestas at 2pm, time with family and friends, and a real sense of community permeate daily life. It puts things into perspective and reminds me how important it is to seek balance and slow down every so often.

My key takeaway? If you’re planning a trip to Spain, don’t just settle for the tourist hotspots like Marbella or the Costa del Sol. Galera and regions like it offer the true Spanish experience, largely untouched by mass tourism. All you need is a car and a willingness to go off the beaten path, you won’t regret it.

If you’re interested in my ongoing journey of running a lap of the world barefoot, or have questions about running in Spain, drop me a line,I love to hear from fellow runners and adventurers!
