Over the weekend, something truly eye-opening happened. Picture the scene: a close-knit group of friends, the hum of chatter, probably one too many drinks. Among the laughter, one friend—clearly struggling—had a bit of a breakdown. The energy in the room instantly changed. We all rallied, trying to support, but as I took a step back, something powerful dawned on me:
Every problem is relative.
Your struggles are your world. But so are everyone else’s.
That hard-hitting scene reminded me: just because one person’s crisis looks bigger on paper, doesn’t make someone else’s hurt any less real. And crucially, it doesn’t give us a free pass to dismiss or belittle anyone's feelings.
The Power of Genuine Empathy
Too many times, we fall into the trap of comparison:
“You think you have it tough? Wait ‘til you hear MY storey!”
But that's not how empathy works. When someone opens up about their struggles, they’re trusting you. They're looking for understanding, not a contest.
Here’s what I’ve learnt on this ultra-marathon journey:
A problem shared is ONLY a problem halved if it’s met with empathy.
When you’re riding high, stay humble.
When you see someone else riding high, wish them well – genuinely.
The world doesn't reward bitterness or jealousy; it rewards those who share kindness, even (especially!) when times are hard.
Humility, Karma, and the Relentless Path Forward
Running every single day, rain or shine, blistered and battered, is a humbling grind. Some days I feel invincible. Others? Not so much. But one thing never changes: the need for humility and gratitude—especially when luck seems to be on my side.
I’m relentlessly focused on my mission to save children’s lives. But regardless of the distance I rack up, I try to stay grounded: congratulating others on their wins, empathising with their losses, and believing deeply in the ripple effect of kindness. Karma, energy, call it what you will—what you put out into the world echoes back.
Let’s Build a Community of Empathy
I challenge you: next time someone shares a problem, resist the urge to compare. Listen. Empathise. Celebrate their courage in opening up.
And when you see someone doing well, be their biggest cheerleader. That energy will find its way back to you, I promise.
If my mission—to run further than day 4,292, chase down 40,075 km barefoot, and raise £1,000,000 for vulnerable children—means anything to you, join me. Every share, like, and comment brings us closer to changing lives.
