Preparing for Marathon Day: Mindset and Tips

Hello, as I lace up my running shoes for another day and reflect on the countless miles I've covered, I've come to appreciate the importance of the mindset, especially as race day looms closer. Today, I want to share my thoughts on preparing for a marathon, particularly the day before the big event. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or gearing up for your first race, I hope you find some useful insights here.

The Night Before the Marathon

You're probably wondering why on earth I find myself running in the pitch dark the day before a marathon. Well, let me explain. It's currently 27 minutes past midnight, and this slightly insane schedule is part of my strategy. By tackling my run at this ungodly hour, I maximise my recovery time before the race itself, which starts at 10 AM on Sunday — giving me a good 34 hours to rest.

This technique revolves around something I call back-to-back running. It essentially involves completing a run the day before and then, very early, doing the run for the following day. It's particularly useful when I'm travelling and unpredictable factors like flight delays come into play. But primarily, it's about recovery time and being as fresh as possible for the race.

Mental Preparation: Embrace the Challenge

Marathons are no small feat. They’re colossal events that can push you to your physical and mental limits. Preparing your mind is just as crucial as conditioning your body. It's natural to feel fear, anxiety, and concern. These emotions stem from the enormity of the task ahead. But let me offer some advice: focus on what you can control and enjoy the journey.

Personally, I've learnt to approach each marathon with a mindset of gratitude and excitement. Yes, there will be challenging moments. Yes, there will be times when you question why you ever signed up. But fixate on the enjoyable parts. Smile, embrace the experience, and remind yourself how lucky you are to be able to run.

Pre-Race Rituals: Fuel, Rest, and Hydration

The day before the marathon is all about conserving energy and fuelling your body. My routine involves eating as many carbohydrates as possible to ensure my glycogen stores are full. This process, known as carb loading, helps sustain energy levels throughout the race. I'll also spend the day relaxing, watching TV, and doing as little as possible to save every ounce of energy.

Travel is often a part of the routine, too. For instance, I’ll be heading to Inverness and making sure to arrive with plenty of time to settle in. Once there, it’s about staying relaxed, hydrated, and continuing to carb load. The goal is to avoid any unnecessary strain or stress.

Navigating Pre-Race Nerves

Nerves are part and parcel of race preparation. The key is not to let nervous tension drain your valuable energy. Training is behind you now; it's about showing up and doing your best. A good night's sleep is crucial, so I'll aim to be in bed by 9 or 10 PM for a solid 8 hours of rest.

One concern I always address is foot care. In my last marathon, I suffered from a horrendous blister that could have ended my running streak. To prevent that, I'll use Vaseline to reduce friction and ensure my footwear is appropriate.

A Holistic Approach to Race Day

Standing at the start line of a marathon can feel like gazing up at Mount Everest. But remember, you’ve put in the work. Now it's time to trust your training, stay positive, and enjoy the experience as much as possible.

Marathons are incredible journeys that offer profound insights into your own resilience and strength. Savour the scenery, enjoy the camaraderie with fellow runners, and take in every moment. It’s an adventure of discovery, both of the world around you and within yourself.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to drop me a line.
