What if I told you, running an ultra marathon is easier than running a standard marathon? As wild as it sounds, that’s become my lived reality after 1,838 consecutive days of running and as I prepare for tomorrow’s 50k, I’m about to share the raw, real, ultra-focused secrets you must know if you want to tackle your own incredible challenge.
I’m Kevin Brittain, founder of the Runpreneur Challenge. My ambitious goal is to smash past Day 4,292, complete the 40,075km (the entire circumference of the earth!) and, most importantly, raise £1,000,000 to save children’s lives around the world. This is more than running. This is purpose at pace.
The Ultimate Question: Marathon vs Ultra, What’s So Different?
From the outside, ultramarathons look like next-level agony. But here’s the catch that will make you think twice: marathons demand max pace for hours, flirting with that dreaded “wall”. Ultras? The focus shifts. Speed is less important. It’s about simply finishing and, often, about community.
Tomorrow, I’ll toe the line for a local, fundraising 50k ultra. It’s intimate: 100 runners, split between three races. The ultra itself is friendly: ten 5k loops across 24 hours. You could walk it and still finish inside the time limit. No massive pressure. But don’t let the format fool you. Preparation is the “make or break” factor, especially because every ultra is completely unique.
How I’m Preparing (and How YOU Should Too)
Because this ultra is local, logistics are a breeze. But I’ve learnt (the hard way) that ultra events can be wildly variable, from point-to-point 200-milers needing support crews, to small looped runs like this one where you can refuel every 30 minutes. So, here’s my golden checklist direct from my Runpreneur diary:
1. Research Your Race Thoroughly
Terrain, weather, participant reviews. Use everything you can find! Each event is different and throws up surprises.
For me, tomorrow is forecasted to be blisteringly hot, so hydration is my first priority (I’ll pack extra bottles and electrolytes).
2. Gear Up to Conditions
Clothes: I’ll take three running outfits, a portable washing line, and enough dry kit to lounge in between runs.
Shoes: The terrain decides—be precise!
Medical supplies: Plasters, anti-chafing balm, especially if you’re pushing longer distances or unfamiliar ground.
3. Food & Fuel
At this event, there’s a kitchen and snacks galore, but for many ultras, you’ll need to carry your own stash. Learn what agrees with your stomach ahead of time! I’ll grab my favourites in the morning, and now I can dash out locally if I need something extra.
4. Plan for the Unexpected
Is it a point-to-point? You might need a support crew. In my case, 5k loops mean access to my bag and base every half hour. Easy.
Overnight running? Don’t forget a head torch and reflective gear for safety.
5. Use Technology Wisely
I always rely on AI to build my kit lists and strategies. If you’re new, ask: “What kit do I need for a 24hr ultra in 30°C heat?” and let the wisdom of the web guide you.
6. Community Is Everything
Forget something critical? Don’t panic. Other ultra runners are the most supportive and generous athletes out there. Someone will lend you whatever you need.
The Honest Truth: Every Ultra Marathon Is Different
You need to personalise your prep for each event. Don’t take a cookie-cutter approach! My diary is full of stories where the right research, the right kit, and a ‘plan B’ saved the day.
I’ll be running my loops, swapping kit, eating, hydrating, and for once enjoying the journey without fixating on the clock. It’s not just about me crossing a finish line; it’s about us raising awareness, gathering support, and reaching that massive £1M goal for children’s causes.
