My Latest Running Gear Updates - Top to Bottom Essentials and Technology Integration
Introduction
Welcome back, Runpreneur community! Today, I want to share with you the latest updates to my running gear. With 1555 consecutive days of running under my belt, I've put a lot of thought into the equipment I use, so keep reading to discover what I'm wearing, why I wear it, and hopefully, find some useful insights for your own running journey.
Why Running Gear Matters
For many of you who follow my mission—saving the lives of children by attempting the ultimate ultra marathon of run vlogging on consecutive days around the world barefoot—running gear is more than just clothing and gadgets; it's a lifeline. It keeps me comfortable, injury-free, and connected to my support network. Your support through likes, shares, and comments helps amplify this mission, so thank you!
From Head to Toe: My Gear Breakdown
Headgear: The Essential Snood
I start from the top with a basic snood. This versatile piece doubles as a headband to absorb sweat in hot conditions and as ear warmers during colder days. In the winter, I'll wear a second snood around my neck to keep warm.
Upper Body: Technical Running Gear
When it comes to tops, I stick with technical running gear. Branding isn't a major concern for me; the key is moisture-wicking fabric that prevents chafing. Depending on the temperature:
Above 15°C: Vest
10 - 15°C: T-shirt
5 - 10°C: Skin with a T-shirt on top
Below 5°C: Skin with a winter running jacket (waterproof and insulating), plus gloves
Lower Body: Shorts and Tights
For the lower half, I opt for running shorts above 5°C. When temperatures dip below 5°C, I switch to compression tights, usually from Under Armour or New Balance. These are well-fitted and provide the necessary insulation.
Footwear: Vibram Five Fingers
On my feet, I swear by Vibram Five Fingers—specifically, the V-Run and V-Trail models. I wear these in all conditions, replacing them roughly every six months. Because I run on roads during the winter, my V-Runs wear out a bit faster than my V-Trails, but I always have an active pair of each.
Socks: Toe Socks by Hilly or Injinji
My footwear setup would be incomplete without toe socks from Hilly or Injinji. They fit like gloves for your feet, which are essential when wearing five-finger footwear. These socks are consistent performers in both hot and cold conditions.
Technology: Staying Connected and Monitored
On the technology front, I use:
1. AirPods Pro 2: To listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks from my Apple Watch Ultra 2.
2. Apple Watch Ultra 2: My go-to device for making calls, tracking runs, and listening to music. I'm eagerly awaiting the Ultra 3 for its extended battery life and improved features.
3. Polar Verity Sense Heart Rate Monitor: This is paired with the Apple Watch to give me accurate heart rate data, which syncs with the WorkOut Doors app and Strava. The battery lasts about ten days between charges.
Periodic Gear Updates: A Must for Every Runner
Regardless of how good your gear is, you periodically need to renew or replace it. For me:-
Footwear: Every six months
Watch: Annually
AirPods: Every couple of years
Running attire: Every two years
Socks: Annually
Simple issues like unnecessary chafing or blisters can be avoided with regular updates. Always have a review schedule for your gear, especially if you're putting in significant mileage and frequency like I do.
