Let’s be real. Not every run as part of this epic challenge is a sunset jog along flat tracks. Sometimes, like in Vejer de la Frontera in southwestern Spain, you face runs with unbearable elevation—think 260 metres climb squeezed into just 7k! To put that in perspective, my last two marathons didn’t even come close to that elevation, and those were 42km grinds [Read more about that here].
But it’s on days like this, when my motivation’s been drained by sun, family activities, and pure exhaustion, that the voice in my head shouts: “Why am I doing this? Why not just skip today?”
Here’s What I Do Differently… (And You Can Too)
This isn’t just about putting one foot in front of the other. It’s about tackling adversity head-on—on the hills, and in life itself. Here’s my secret weapon: gratitude.
When I feel myself dreading a run, I pause and remember—there are thousands of people who would give anything for the chance to be able to run, who, due to injury, circumstance or health, simply can’t. At that moment, I remind myself: this is a gift. Suddenly, my mindset flips from negativity to positivity—my problems pale in comparison, and my gratitude carries me up those hills.
Why This Works (Beyond Just Running)
Most people, I believe, live life focusing on what’s tough, unfair, or what they lack—95% of us, to be honest. The real game-changers, the truly happy and fulfilled, are those who can switch their mindset. By concentrating on what you’re grateful for, you strip negativity of its power. Even the gnarliest run or life challenge becomes manageable—maybe even enjoyable.
Here’s my challenge to you: next time you’re knocked by a gruelling training session, an energy-sapping day, or a looming fear, try reframing things. Ask yourself, “What am I grateful for right now?” It doesn’t have to be big—sometimes just the ability to take another step is enough.
