Harnessing ADHD: A Journey to Success
Hello everyone, Kevin here. Today, I want to delve deeply into a topic that's very personal to me: ADHD. Many of you might know me as the host of Runpreneur, but behind the scenes, I’m someone who has learnt to live with and harness the potential of ADHD.
Discovering My ADHD
A while back, I took an assessment for ADHD and scored just above the middle. This means I do have ADHD, but not to a significant extent. My initial reaction was a blend of relief and curiosity. I’ve always had a racing mind, 24/7, filled with ideas and thoughts. Procrastination has been a significant challenge, along with mood swings and moments of hyperfocus. These tendencies painted a pretty accurate picture of my daily struggles and triumphs.
Building Systems and Processes
Despite these challenges, I’ve managed to build successful businesses and achieve significant milestones. How did I do it? Through systems, processes, and a supportive network of people.
I’ve designed an infrastructure around me that allows me to counteract my weaknesses. Tasks I would procrastinate on to get delegated. I have structured rules, checklists, and schedules that keep me focused. These serve as my safety harness, allowing me to realign myself when distractions strike.
In essence, it’s about understanding ADHD and implementing strategies to handle its negative aspects while leveraging its positives.
The Power of Routine and Coping Mechanisms
One key aspect of managing ADHD is having a coping mechanism. For me, running and blogging have become that outlet. When I’m out running, I am in nature, surrounded by tranquillity which is incredibly calming. The physical exercise releases positive endorphins, and the act of talking through my thoughts on my vlog acts as a therapeutic release. This daily routine helps me manage the stress and constant mental activity that comes with ADHD.
Leveraging the Strengths of ADHD
While ADHD poses significant challenges, it also brings unique strengths. The ability to solve complex problems, the creativity, and the capacity to hyperfocus are incredible traits. By building systems around my weaknesses, I’ve been able to tap into these strengths and take my personal and professional life to new heights.
Advice for Fellow ADHD Sufferers
To those who are also on this ADHD journey, understand how it affects you. Read up on the condition, learn all its facets. Then, focus on amplifying its positive aspects—problem-solving, creativity, hyperfocus—while mitigating the negatives with robust systems and processes.
My ultimate takeaway is that ADHD, when well-managed, can be a gift. It's about harnessing its power effectively.
Final Thoughts
Living with ADHD doesn’t have to be a limitation. With the right strategies and support, it can be transformed into a powerful enabler. If you’re struggling with ADHD, remember that you’re not alone, and there are ways to build a happier, more productive life.
