Have you noticed how ābalanceā seems to mean something different for everyone? Thatās because it is different for everyone. What works for me might be chaos for you. But hereās the kicker: as soon as other people enter your world, partners, kids, friends, colleagues, achieving that elusive harmony becomes a juggling act worthy of a circus.
As I run towards my ultimate goal, going beyond Day 4,292 of the Runpreneur Challenge, covering an Earth-sized 40,075km, and raising Ā£1,000,000 for childrenās causes,Iām constantly confronting what ābalanceā really means.
š The Surprising Link Between Your Values and Lasting Life Balance
Hereās what nobody tells you: balance starts with your values. According to Dr John Demartiniās Values Factor, the main areas to consider are: spiritual, vocational, financial, mental, physical, social, and familial. Everyone rates these differently. For me, family and vocation top the chart, while social sits near the bottom, probably not surprising for a bloke running solo most mornings!
If youāre out of whack, chances are, your real values arenāt lining up with your daily choices.
š” The āAha!ā Moment: When Balance Involves Other People
Itās easy enough to say, āDo what feels right for you.ā But unless youāre a hermit, your life will impact others. If your highest values clash with your partnerās,or your teamās,friction is inevitable.
Hereās the challenge, laid bare: compromise isnāt just a nice word,itās vital. Whether in business, marriage, or family, youāve got to understand one anotherās values and find a shared way forward. Talk about what matters, compare notes, and actually build a values hierarchy you can agree on.
š The 3-Step Formula to Better Life Balance (From Someone Whoās Still Learning!)
Know your true values ā If youāve never sat down and really thought about this, do it. Which areas truly matter most? Career? Family? Health? Make a list, be honest.
Ask others to do the same ā Especially those closest to you. Compare lists. Youāll probably be surprised!
Create a ācompromise hierarchyā ā Together, decide on the shared priorities. This becomes your decision-making toolkit. Itās not about winning and losing,itās about living in harmony.
š My Personal Take,And Where I Struggle
Iāll be frank: I donāt have all the answers. With ADHD in the mix, Iām frequently āall or nothing,ā which often isnāt balanced. Social stuff rarely makes my shortlist, but I push myself to be present for those I care about. If you find yourself swinging wildly between work and home and fitness and friends, yes, itās normal.
But every day I run, vlog, and chat with the Runpreneur community, Iām learning. The more we align around shared values, the happier and more harmonious our balance becomes.
