Enjoying a Music Festival With Family:
Tips and Reflections
Hey everyone, Kevin Brittain here. I recently had the pleasure of attending a music festival with my family, and it was an incredible experience that I just have to share. As you may know, I’m all about creating lasting memories and living life to the fullest. Music festivals are fantastic for immersing yourself in a vibrant atmosphere that offers something for everyone. However, navigating these events with your family can be a bit challenging, especially when it comes to budgeting and planning. Here's a recap of my experience and some tips to help you make the most out of your next music festival adventure.
Navigating the Cost
Let's be honest, festivals aren’t cheap. An espresso martini set me back £10.50, a gin and tonic cost £7.50, and a pint was £6.80. When it comes to food, even a simple portion of chips was around £6 or £7. So, my first tip is to save up in advance. This way, the costs won't pinch as hard when you're there. Do the math and budget for both food and drink as a family to avoid any financial surprises.
Financial Fairness with Friends
If you’re attending with friends, it's essential to discuss how you’ll handle expenses. My suggestion? Avoid doing rounds. Instead, use an app like Splitwise to track everyone's spending and ensure the costs are shared equally. Trust me, it’ll prevent any awkwardness and keep everyone's wallet a little happier.
Exploration is Key
One of my favourite parts about music festivals is the variety. Don't be afraid to explore all the different tents and areas. Whether you're into dancing, comedy, arts, or theatre, there’s something for everyone, from toddlers to the elderly. So dive in, immerse yourself in the aura of the festival, and float through the vibrant atmosphere.
Prepare for All Weather Conditions
Festival weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for both rain and shine. I forgot sun cream and ended up burnt to a cinder. A hat and sunglasses are absolute essentials. Also, remember that it can get chilly in the evenings, so pack a hoodie, jumper, or a light puffer jacket. I even found myself envious of those with dry robes, as they looked so comfy during the chilly nights and mornings.
Footwear Matters
Wellies or short wellies that double as boots were an absolute game-changer for me. Even though we had minimal rain, the morning dew made the ground wet. Flip flops and sandals left others with wet, uncomfortable feet. My ankle-high wellies were supportive and perfect for all conditions—hot, dusty, wet, or muddy—so I highly recommend them.
Budget Accordingly for the Whole Family
Between the cost of tickets and everything you’ll need once inside, it's wise to budget around £2000 for a family of five. Yes, it's expensive, but the memories you’ll create are priceless. Watching your kids rock out to bands like Kasabian or Nile Rodgers & Chic is something you'll treasure forever. Those moments make every penny spent worth it.
This experience reaffirmed why I value creating memories with my family. Music festivals offer an unparalleled atmosphere of joy and togetherness. If you’re considering going to one as a family, just go. Prepare financially, pack appropriately, and be ready to explore.
