Why I’ll Never Underestimate a Herd of Cows Again (And Why You Shouldn’t Either)

Have you ever thought a herd of cows could put an end to your world-record ultra marathon journey? Sounds absurd, right? Well, let me tell you,it almost happened to me.

Hey Runpreneurs, Kevin here, currently thousands of days into the Runpreneur Challenge, on a wild and unwavering mission to go beyond 4,292 consecutive days of running, cover a monstrous 40,075km,the circumference of the Earth!,and raise a staggering £1,000,000 to save children’s lives. Today, I want to share an experience that nearly turned my adventure upside down. Trust me, you’ll want to read this before your next country trail run.

The Day “Be Wary of Cows” Became My Mantra

The world loves to throw curveballs at us runners. Sometimes it’s the weather, other times it’s aching legs or unpredictable terrain. But a herd of cows? That was a first, even for me.

Picture this: I’m running on a scenic mountain trail in Spain, keeping up the daily streak, when I spot a farmer herding fifty cows right down the narrow pathway towards me. Jokes aside, this isn’t your Sunday walk through the English countryside. Trust me when I say, fifty cows coming straight at you is not something you shrug off.

Up to this point in my five-and-a-quarter-year journey, cows have always been passive, docile creatures,90% of the time, they’re absolutely no bother. But, there’s one massive caveat I learnt the hard way: Never forget a mother cow will ALWAYS defend her calf (02:38). In this case, hidden amongst the herd, a number of calves turned those gentle giants into hyper-alert, aggressive bodyguards.

How I Handled a Cow Showdown (Survival Tips from Experience)

Here’s what happened (so you don’t repeat my mistake):

  1. Paused & Assessed: As soon as I saw the crowd of cows, I immediately stopped running and moved to the side (
    02:31

). Quick, jerky movements can alarm animals,so I stayed calm and walked.

  2. Gave Space: It’s always best to let wildlife pass,if you can give a wide berth, do it.

  3. Stayed Alert: One mother cow locked eyes with me, then started making aggressive head movements, horns down, fully ready to charge (
    03:36

    ).

  4. Escaped Smartly: As she lunged, I dove across a ditch into a neighbouring field, just in time for the farmer to usher them all away.

If that ditch hadn’t been there, I could’ve been in proper trouble. It was a sobering reminder: never get complacent, especially in unfamiliar locations where animal behaviour can surprise even seasoned runners.

My Golden Rules for Wildlife Encounters on a Run

If you value your safety (and eventual world records), follow my go-to tactics when facing wildlife:

  • Walk, don’t run when near unknown animals.

  • Avoid sudden movements,no waving, shouting, or panic.

  • Give a wide berth,don’t crowd them.

  • Wait it out, most animals will get bored and move.

  • Turn back if needed, your safety always comes first (
    06:33).

Whether it’s cows, bulls, dogs, deer,or even bears (depending on where you’re mad enough to run, like me!),these rules can keep you safe out there.
