Let’s get brutally honest: no matter how much of a productivity machine you might be, procrastination is always lurking in the background. As someone who’s committed to the relentless Runpreneur Challenge—running daily, barefoot, covering a distance equal to a lap of the world and aiming to raise £1M for children—I’m no stranger to both big ambitions AND the little things I keep putting off.
But here’s the kicker: procrastination holds you back, no matter your goals. It’s the silent killer of dreams, productivity, and progress. That’s why I created my own system for overcoming it, and today I’m laying it all out so you can crush the same barriers holding you back.
What is a “Banish Procrastination Day”?
If you’re imagining some fancy productivity tech, think again. It’s dead simple: a Banish Procrastination Day is a day I completely block out—no meetings, no distractions, no ‘quick wins’—just pure, focused time dedicated to clearing the hardest, most nagging tasks off my list.
These aren’t the tasks you can easily delegate or outsource. I’m talking about the 5% of jobs that only you can do: legal forms, tricky banking bits, sensitive responsibilities. The things you keep moving back on your calendar because, let’s face it, you don’t want to do them.
Here’s how I put this into action:
My [executive assistant] (a lifesaver!) tracks when I keep pushing due dates back on these essential tasks.
As soon as I’m spotted procrastinating, a Banish Procrastination Day gets locked into my diary.
On that day, my schedule’s wiped clean—no excuses.
I tackle every single procrastinated task, starting from the top priorities.
Why Does It Work?
By focusing all my energy on these tasks, I stop feeling guilty about dragging them out and prevent minor issues from snowballing into far bigger problems. Plus, by batching all those “I’ll do it later” jobs into one day, I’m not mixing them in with my other daily responsibilities, so my drive and mental energy stay sharp for the important things.
If you don’t have an assistant, you can still do this. Simply schedule regular Banish Procrastination Days—monthly, quarterly, you choose—and hold yourself accountable to ONLY doing your most neglected tasks on those days. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.
Pro-Tip: Prioritise the toughest, most consequential jobs first. You’ll feel lighter and more motivated as you power through your list.
Why I Do This: The Bigger Picture
My journey isn’t just about running—every single day I hit the road for the Runpreneur Challenge, fundraising for children’s lives. But daily small wins are only possible if I keep on top of everything, including the stuff I least want to do.
By mastering procrastination, I’ve not only improved my productivity, but I’ve also kept my focus razor-sharp on this mission: to run 40,075 km, break through day 4,292, and raise £1,000,000. That’s how you create real, lasting impact.
