Ever found yourself lacing up your trainers again just a few hours after your last gruelling session, questioning your own sanity? Trust me – you’re not alone. This is the untold reality behind the glamorous idea of a running streak. Welcome to my world on Day 1,905 of the Runpreneur Challenge, as I share the hard truths about back-to-back running and what it really takes to be relentless in pursuit of 40,075km, £1,000,000 raised for children’s causes, and a running streak that will hopefully smash 4,292 consecutive days.
The Dreaded Back-to-Back Run – The Secret Weapon for Streak Runners and Ultra Marathoners
Let’s cut straight to it – back-to-back running is brutal. In my journey, I’ve been forced into it more times than I’d like to count. Picture this: you’ve just finished your daily run, and before you’ve even recovered, you’re prepping for another, sometimes mere hours later. Why? Because life never sticks to plan.
Regular runners, and especially run streakers, you need to know this: back-to-back running isn’t about logging more miles – it’s about surviving the streak when life throws a spanner in the works. It’s about discipline, compromise, and an ironclad commitment to the cause – in my case, saving children’s lives one barefoot mile at a time.
Why Put Myself Through This?
There’s a simple reason: life gets in the way. Maybe you’ve been there – a day jam-packed with meetings, school runs, unexpected work deadlines, or the unpredictability of air travel. Delays happen. Schedules change. Suddenly, your sacred run slot vanishes. I once landed almost 12 hours late thanks to travel disruptions, narrowly squeezing in my run just before midnight – a close call I’ll never forget.
That’s why, whenever I’m facing a travel day or an overloaded schedule, I’ll often run after midnight, stacking today’s run and tomorrow’s as close as humanly possible, sometimes with as little as 12 hours between them. It’s not glamorous – in fact, it can feel fairly grim as you force yourself out at 1am, legs still aching from the day before (Kevin Brittain).
But here’s the strategic magic: getting your run done ASAP after midnight gives you up to a 46-hour window to fit in your next one. That’s a game-changer when you’re travelling to the other side of the planet or battling life’s chaos.
Back-to-Back: Survival Strategy, Not Sadistic Hobby
If you’re early in your running streak, you might be lucky enough to have skirted these challenges. But let me be clear: the longer your streak lasts, the more precious it becomes. Miss a day, and it’s gone. That fragility breeds obsession – you’ll do anything to protect it.
So when you hear “back-to-back running”, know this isn’t about machismo; it’s about streak preservation. You do it for a reason – most often to safeguard your streak when life threatens to derail it (Kevin Brittain).
What Every Run Streaker Needs to Remember
Plan ahead. An ultra-marathon runner's mindset helps – know when life’s obstacles are coming, and act pre-emptively.
Embrace the discomfort. It’s never enjoyable. Waiting up until midnight to run again is essentially the definition of commitment.
It’s worth it… for the bigger picture. Every grim, sleep-deprived mile is fuelling my mission: to complete a 40,075km barefoot world lap, raise £1,000,000, and save more children’s lives with every share, like, and donation.
