Why Focus Is The Most Important Business Skill You Can Develop - Day 1967 Running Reflection

Today on day 1967 of my daily barefoot-style running streak, I made a difficult decision that taught me one of the most valuable lessons about business success.

I closed down two companies this month - my cafe and my meal prep business. Both had potential. Both could have succeeded. But they didn't, and the reason was brutally simple: lack of focus.

As I ran through the morning streets, reflecting on these closures, the parallel between running and business became crystal clear. You cannot run multiple marathons simultaneously and expect to excel at any of them. The same principle applies to entrepreneurship.

The statistics are unforgiving. Ninety percent of businesses fail - that's nine out of ten ventures that don't make it. When you're already facing those odds, splitting your attention across multiple projects doesn't just reduce your chances of success - it virtually eliminates them.

I've learned this lesson the hard way. Both the cafe and the meal prep company were side projects, receiving fragments of my time and attention. While I was giving 10% here and 15% there, other entrepreneurs were dedicating 100% of their focus to similar ventures. The outcome was inevitable.

Running 19,670km over 1967 consecutive days has taught me that consistency and focus compound over time. Every single day, I lace up my Vibram FiveFingers and head out, regardless of weather, workload, or how I'm feeling. This unwavering focus has carried me nearly halfway around the world's circumference.

The same principle applies to business success. Every successful business I've built - including Operations Director, which continues to thrive - received my undivided attention during its critical early stages. When you're solving a real problem for a target market, focus becomes your competitive advantage.

Business is inherently difficult. Every venture carries overhead costs that must be covered before you see any profit. When you're spreading yourself thin across multiple projects, none receive the attention required to generate sufficient revenue. You end up with several failing businesses instead of one successful one.

The meal prep company and cafe weren't bad ideas. They were addressing real market needs. But ideas don't build businesses - execution does. And effective execution requires the kind of sustained focus that most people aren't willing to commit.

During today's run, I thought about the entrepreneurs I know who've achieved significant success. Without exception, they focused intensely on one business until it was generating substantial profit before considering expansion. They understood that starting a business as a side project dramatically reduces the already slim chances of success.

This doesn't mean you can't eventually run multiple businesses. But the sequence matters. Build one solid foundation before attempting to construct another. Master one market before entering the next.

The parallel to my running mission is striking. I'm not attempting to run around the world while simultaneously training for swimming competitions or cycling events. Every day, every step, every kilometre is focused on the single goal of covering 40,075km while raising £1M for children's causes through Great Ormond Street Hospital and BBC Children in Need.

Focus isn't just about what you choose to do - it's about what you choose not to do. Every "no" to a distraction is a "yes" to your primary objective. Every moment spent on secondary projects is time stolen from your main venture's success.

The lesson from today's run and these business closures is clear: if you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, pick one business that solves a real problem, and give it everything you have. The statistics are already against you - don't make them worse by dividing your focus.

As I continue towards my goal of running the equivalent distance of Earth's circumference, every step reinforces this truth. Consistency, focus, and unwavering commitment to a single objective create the foundation for extraordinary achievements.

With 20,405km still ahead of me and hundreds of thousands of pounds yet to raise for children in need, I'm grateful for these business failures. They've reinforced what my daily running streak has been teaching me all along: focus is not just important - it's everything.
