Unlocking Better Health: My Journey with the Zoe App
Welcome back to another entry in my "Diary of a Runpreneur," chronicling consecutive day 1571 of my run vlogging mission. For those tuning in for the first time, my name is Kevin Brittain, and I am committed to running a distance equivalent to a lap around the world—barefoot style. My overarching goal is to save children's lives and raise funds through this extraordinary challenge. So please, if you believe in my mission, subscribe, share, like, and comment. The more people we get in front of, the more money we raise, and the more children's lives we can save.
Today is an exciting day because it's Zoe App Results Day. I finally got my results back from this scientific, data-driven health test, and I can't wait to share them and explain what they mean to me.
What is the Zoe App?
For those unfamiliar, the Zoe App is a health subscription service where you perform various at-home tests. These include assessing the macrobiotics of your gut, your blood sugar levels, and your blood fat levels. You also conduct blood tests, gut transition tests, and log your diet. All this data is meticulously captured and analysed, ultimately helping you make more informed dietary choices suited to your body’s unique needs. Ideally, this leads to an array of benefits—better emotional health, increased energy, improved sleep, and overall wellness.
My Absurd Results
When I started, I was optimistic. Running every day for 1,571 days and adhering to a pescetarian diet, I thought my health metrics would reflect my disciplined lifestyle. Boy, was I wrong!
Blood Sugar Levels: My blood sugar levels came back as poor, somewhere in the 40s out of 100.
Blood Fat Levels: This measures how efficiently your body processes fats. My score? Also in the poor range—around the 40s.
Gut Macrobiotics: This was worse than poor; it was bad. I scored 19 out of 100. For context, I do have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which likely affects my gut bacteria balance. My gut's bad bacteria outweighed the good bacteria significantly.
Diet: Despite my best efforts to eat healthily, my diet score was 44 out of 100.
What Do These Results Mean?
At first glance, these results might seem disastrous, especially for someone who runs daily and has a reasonably restrictive diet. The reality, however, is that this data is immensely valuable.
The power of the Zoe App is in its detailed analysis. With this information, I now know which foods are beneficial for my genetic makeup and which ones aren't. For instance, foods like rice, whole grain multi-seeded bread, bananas, and grapes score low for me. On the flip side, avocados are like superfoods for me.
My Dietary Changes
Armed with this newfound knowledge, I’m making critical changes to my diet. For nearly four years, I've been a pescetarian, but I plan to reintroduce chicken and turkey into my meals. Surprisingly, my diet was lacking in protein—something that the reintroduction of poultry should help balance.
Additionally, I'll be cutting out processed foods and high-carb items like pasta and bread, which negatively affect my blood sugar levels. Instead, I'll focus more on consuming nuts, seeds, pulses, grains, and lentils. I'm even encouraged to eat more cheese!
The Bigger Picture
These changes, although based on seemingly negative results, are set to have a profoundly positive impact on my life. Even a 1% marginal gain in any aspect of my health can have compounding effects that are truly transformative. This data isn't just generic advice; it's personalised to me, making it far more actionable and effective.
Final Thoughts
If you're considering trying the Zoe App, I highly recommend it. Yes, there is a financial outlay, but the benefits far outweigh the costs if you are committed to following through. The insights you gain are not just enlightening but life-changing.
