The Secret Weapon Every Runner Needs: My Sacred Running Playlist (And Why You Need Yours!)
What if I told you the biggest difference between finishing your toughest run and giving up might be... one song? Intrigued? Read on.
Welcome back, Runpreneur family! As you know, I'm Kevin, and today I’m taking you behind the scenes on consecutive day 1,713 of my Runpreneur Challenge — my mission to run 40,075 km (the distance around the world!), go beyond 4,292 consecutive days running, and most importantly, raise £1,000,000 for children’s causes. Every step I take — barefoot and vlogging — is fuelled by this mission. But let’s not kid ourselves: some days, running feels IMPOSSIBLE.
The Real Enemy on Tough Runs? Your Mind (and the Weather)
Earlier today, I stepped out beneath a grim, grey sky, assaulted by biting winds. Believe me, motivation was at rock-bottom. We’ve all been there: the conditions are dreadful, your spirits low, and you contemplate cutting the run short. But it’s in these moments my sacred running playlist becomes my secret weapon.
Why Playlists Aren’t Just Background Noise
For many, running playlists are about beat and rhythm. And yes, syncing your playlist to your cadence can help (it works for me on routine runs). But on those daunting days? It’s EMOTION that matters. The right song can turn a slog into a surge of energy, raising goosebumps, kicking you into gear, and unlocking grit you didn’t know you had.
My All-Time Motivational Tracks (And Why They Work For Me)
No running post of mine is ever complete without mentioning my go-to: the Rocky Soundtrack. No matter how beaten down you feel, channel a little Rocky Balboa — the perennial underdog who keeps fighting, no matter what. If you’ve ever laced up with “Gonna Fly Now” pounding in your ears, you know the feeling.
But let’s get personal:
“Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac — Immortalised in Forrest Gump (my all-time favourite running film), it isn’t strictly about running, but its emotional punch and connection to my own journey makes it a finish-line booster.
“Born To Run” by Bruce Springsteen — It’s obvious, but sometimes you need that classic whoosh of optimism and defiance.
“Love Of My Life” by Queen — Not your usual running track, right? But the memories and meaning packed in this song give me strength, helping me dig deep when my legs want to give out.
Here’s the real secret: Your sacred running playlist is sacred to YOU. Don’t copy mine—build yours. Choose tracks that mean something. Emotional connection is your fuel. It can rescue you when your body says “enough”.
