There’s a specific kind of magic that happens when the sun begins to dip toward the horizon while you’re mid-stride. Today marked Day 1,940 of my consecutive running streak, and I found myself along the beautiful Lytham St Annes coastline in Lancashire. The tide was out, the air was crisp, and the setting sun against the sea created one of those breathtaking moments that reminds you why you started running in the first place.
The Coastal "Creativity Pill"
As a regular runner, you often find your rhythm in the local streets or familiar trails. But I’ve realised that scheduling a run along the coastline at sunset is an essential experience for anyone looking to clear their head. There is a different type of air out here, much like the thin, fresh air you find at high altitudes in the mountains.
I call it a "creativity pill". Over the course of this journey, I’ve managed to solve all sorts of complex life and business problems while running in these serene environments. The tranquility of nature, especially when it’s as serene as a coastal sunset, provides a clarity of mind that you simply cannot replicate in a gym or on a busy city pavement. It allows you to think things through, work through obstacles, and ultimately, refresh and recharge your internal battery.
Resilience in Every Step
This streak isn’t just about the scenery, though. It’s about the underlying mission. Every day I step out, whether it’s a grey morning or a golden evening like today, I am moving toward a total goal of 40,075km. That is the distance of a lap around the world, and I’m doing it all barefoot-style to raise £1 million for children’s causes.
Consistency is the bedrock of resilience. On Day 1,940, the legs might feel the miles, but the mission to save children’s lives provides an energy that far outweighs physical fatigue. If you haven't experienced a run like this, I urge you to try it. Find a coastline, wait for the sun to drop, and just run. You might find the answers you’ve been looking for.
Stay positive, stay happy, and I’ll see you again tomorrow.
