Running Through the Heat:
My Experience in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Hello, fellow runners and adventure enthusiasts! It's Kevin Brittain here, and today marks the 1536th consecutive day of my running journey. I wanted to share my recent experience running in the beautiful, yet challenging, landscape of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

When you think of Dubrovnik, your mind probably conjures up images of stunning coastlines, historic architecture, and mesmerizing views. While all that is true, running in this region has presented its own set of unique challenges and rewards. Let's start with the difficulties—because, oh boy, there are a few!

Firstly, running in Dubrovnik isn't as straightforward as it might seem. For those considering hitting the trails around here, be prepared for the lack of dedicated pathways. The outskirts of the city offer little in terms of running tracks, forcing you to navigate single carriage roads teeming with traffic—not the safest or most relaxing environment for a run.

Yet, the ultimate challenge for me has been the physical demands of the terrain. Running up in the mountains of Horus ranks among the top three hardest runs I've done to date. The combination of steep inclines, rugged paths, and the relentless heat has truly tested my limits. It's been gruelling, but the views at the top have made every drop of sweat worth it. I wouldn't place it among my routine paths, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for sure.

Now, let's talk about the positives—because there are plenty if you know what to expect.

Despite the harsh conditions, Dubrovnik's natural beauty is second to none. The high hills offer some of the most breathtaking sights I've ever witnessed. Imagine running at dawn or dusk, the perfect times to avoid the scorching midday sun, and being greeted with views that seem almost surreal. It’s moments like these that remind me why I take on such challenges.

Another vital lesson I've learnt here is the importance of preparation. If you’re planning a run in Dubrovnik or similar areas, you must brace yourself for lots of ventilation, sun protection, and hydration. The heat can be blistering, and without the right gear, it could make your run unbearable. Cold showers have become my best friend, offering much-needed relief and recovery after a strenuous run. And of course, plan your runs early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the harsh sun and enjoy more temperate conditions.

As I gear up for my next leg of the journey to Montenegro, just 60 kilometres away, I anticipate similar terrain and challenges. However, with every step, I'm gaining more knowledge and better preparing myself for what lies ahead. Montenegro promises more breath-taking scenery and I can hardly wait to lace up my running shoes and explore it.

So, for those of you looking to combine your love for running with travel, Dubrovnik is undoubtedly a destination to consider—just come prepared. And remember, running in unfamiliar terrains is a mixture of struggle and joy, offering experiences that you'll cherish forever.

That's it from me today. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to drop me a line. Don't forget to subscribe, share, like, and comment if you've enjoyed this post. Always stay positive and happy.

See you again tomorrow!
