Running the Run Norwich 2023: An Unforgettable Experience
Hello, fellow runners and enthusiasts! Welcome back to my consecutive day 1141 of the Diary of a Runpreneur. Today, I want to share an incredible experience with you—my time at Run Norwich 2023. This event is one of the largest 10k runs in the country, with approximately eight and a half thousand participants running for the Community Sports Foundation (CFS) charity, an organisation close to my heart.
Despite being injured with plantar fasciitis, I decided to partake in the event and vlog my journey. I hoped to complete the run in a relaxed 50-55 minutes, just to soak in the atmosphere and support the cause.
Pre-Race Excitement
As I walked towards the start line, the excitement in the air was palpable. The support in Norwich was phenomenal with friendly faces all around. The race had a fantastic turnout, and hearing about the support and the organisation made me eager to start.
And We're Off!
The run kicked off, and I found myself amongst some very quick runners. Even with my injury, I felt determined to keep pace, albeit not pushing too hard too soon. The route had a few hills, and I was cautiously optimistic about reserving some energy for the ending stretch. As I crossed the one-kilometre mark, I was already amazed at the scale and support of the event. The crowd's energy was inspiring, and it was fascinating to see the city come alive to support the runners.
Scenic and Challenging Course
The course was a journey through some of Norwich's iconic landmarks. I passed Riverside and ran around Carrow Road Stadium, reminiscing about my friend, Adam Drury, who used to play there. It was an emotional moment, and a highlight was vlogging while maintaining a sub -45-minute pace—a little faster than I initially planned.
As we looped around the stadium and approached the first water station, I attempted the classic runner's juggle of drinking while moving. Not my most elegant moment, but staying hydrated was key.
Halfway There
Reaching the halfway mark at 5k, I felt surprisingly good. We circled around landmarks like Carrow Road and Norwich Castle. Ahead, lay more sights to explore, including the stunning Cathedral. The support from the crowd was relentless, and their cheers fueled my determination to keep going.
Uphill Battles and Downhill Thrills
Between the five and six-kilometre markers, we encountered some tough inclines. The challenging uphill sections tested my resilience, but the subsequent downhill stretches were a welcome reprieve, allowing me to regain some time and composure.
Final Push Towards Glory
As I approached the seven-kilometre mark, the magnificent Norwich Cathedral came into view. Running past this iconic structure, accompanied by supportive cheers from bystanders, was surreal. With only three kilometres to go, I embarked on the final stretch.
The last two kilometres were a testament to our collective determination. Navigating through a path marked by cobblestones and slight inclines, I encountered the uphill task of the final stretch. Despite the fatigue, I pushed forward, buoyed by the crowd's unwavering support.
Crossing the Finish Line
The last kilometre was the most demanding, with the gradient testing every ounce of my stamina. However, the sight of cheering spectators as I sprinted towards the finish line made it all worthwhile. Crossing the finish line amidst applause was a moment of triumph.
Post-Race Reflections
Although I initially aimed for a sub-45-minute finish, I clocked in around 46 minutes—a respectable time considering my injury. The atmosphere, camaraderie, and support made this event truly memorable.
I even had the pleasure of catching up with friends, including former Norwich City players, who handed out medals. The post-race euphoria, combined with an immense sense of achievement, made every step of the journey worthwhile.
Final Thoughts
Run Norwich 2023 was an incredible event—well-organized, challenging, and immensely fulfilling. If you're considering participating in future runs, I highly recommend it. While the cobblestones and uphill terrain present their own challenges, the experience and support make it an event worth running.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Until the next run, keep pushing your limits and enjoying every step of your running adventures.
Over and out,
Kevin Brittain
