Today marks 1,922 consecutive days of my mission to run 40,075km, a full lap of the world, in barefoot-style footwear. After nearly two thousand days of hitting the pavement without fail, people often ask me about the secret to my consistency. While discipline is the foundation, the real engine behind the "Runpreneur" mission is understanding and leveraging the Power of Flow.
What is Flow?
I’ve realised that flow is a state where you find yourself super productive. It isn't something you can simply switch on or off at will; rather, it is a state you "fall into". When you are in it, the work feels effortless and the output is at its peak. However, it is a finite resource, you eventually fatigue and drift out of that period of flow. The key to high performance, whether in business or ultra-endurance running, is to capitalise on those moments when they arrive.
My Tactics for Finding Flow
Through trial and error, I’ve learnt that the secret to unlocking flow more frequently is acknowledging that everyone is different; what works for me might not work for you. Here is my personal two-step framework for triggering a productive state:
The Low-Stakes Warm-Up: I start my day with a lesser important task, something quick and relatively easy to complete. The simple act of finishing a task makes me feel productive and primes my brain to enter a flow state.
The Pivot to High Priority: Once I feel that momentum, I immediately move into the high-priority, super-urgent work that requires my full focus.
Managing the "Big Picture" Brain
As a strategic entrepreneur and big-picture thinker, I often struggle to break massive projects down into bite-sized chunks for myself, even though I can do it easily for others. To combat procrastination and the demotivation that comes from an unrealistic to-do list, I now apply a "less is more" rule. I ask myself: "What would make today a productive day?". Often, the answer is just one or two critical items. If I tick those off, I've won the day.
The Mission Ahead
Every day I find my flow on the road, I am one step closer to my goal of 40,075km and raising £1M to save children’s lives. This journey is about resilience and long-term thinking, ensuring that every decision serves the highest ROI on my time, money, and energy.
Stay positive, stay happy. I'll see you again tomorrow.
