How I Overcame Extreme Adversity – And Why It’ll Change the Way You Tackle Your Toughest Days

What if the next time your world feels like it’s crumbling, you held the power to turn that pain into purpose?

Welcome back, and today I’m opening up about some of the darkest days I’ve faced – and the mindset secrets I use to come storming out the other side. If you’ve ever felt on the brink of collapse, you’re not alone. But the real question isn’t IF adversity will strike; it’s how you’ll respond when it does.

Why I Do This – And Why You Should Keep Reading

Every day, I lace up, go barefoot, hit the road, and vlog my way around the world with one mission: to save children’s lives by raising £1,000,000 for children’s causes. My bigger goal? To smash through Day 4,292, conquer 40,075km, and make an impact that echoes far beyond just running shoes and finish lines.

But let me be honest. Behind every highlight reel is a story of setbacks and near-collapse. This week, business disasters hit harder than ever. It would’ve been easy to give up or question my purpose. But that’s where real growth is born.

The Brutal Truth: Adversity Doesn’t Care If You’re Ready

You can have the best plans, grand ambitions, or tightest routines—adversity strikes when you least expect it. This week, my goals crumbled, ambitions got rattled, and I was left questioning everything.

What shapes you isn’t the victories—it’s how you rise from the dirt. When the rug is ripped out, when you’re at your limit, how do you find the strength to stand again?

My Barefoot Blueprint for Beating the Odds

I don’t claim to have all the answers, but there’s one tool that’s never failed me: gratitude. When trouble comes roaring in, I force myself to zoom out and remember what truly matters.

If you’ve got your health—and your family and dearest are safe—then you’re already richer than you realise. Even on your worst day, there’s a reason to be thankful. When I dig deep, I always find something: the legacy of loved ones, the power of resilience, or simply the next breath.

Stripping Back to What Matters

When adversity feels suffocating, I strip everything back:

  • Why am I doing this?

  • What’s my ‘why’ beyond all the chaos?

  • Which of the seven value areas—spiritual, mental, physical, vocational, financial, social—anchors me?

For me, the health and happiness of my family come before all else. Close behind: making a positive dent in the world through our charity mission. When I stay rooted in these, whatever else happens in business or life pales in comparison.

How You Can Use this When Adversity Hits YOU

Here’s the process that lifts me every single time:

  1. Find your anchor. What do you value more than anything else? Family, faith, cause?

  2. Express gratitude. Even if it feels impossible. There is ALWAYS something.

  3. Move your body and your mind. My daily run vlogs are therapy in motion—the fresh air reminds me there’s more to life than today’s storm.

  4. Share your struggle. A problem shared is a problem halved—whether through writing, vlogging, or speaking out.

  5. Serve a purpose bigger than yourself. Knowing millions of children’s lives are at stake makes quitting unthinkable.
