Today, I want to share a lesson that’s simple but often forgotten: many hands make light work. It’s something most of us know, but few of us consistently put into action, especially when it comes to community events or volunteer efforts.
After wrapping up the fourth and final day of our annual village football club’s five-a-side tournament, I've been reflecting on what it truly means to be part of a community. This event stretches across four separate days, welcoming young players from under-6s right through to under-16s, both boys and girls. The result? A hugely successful event that raises substantial funds for the club and gives countless children opportunities to participate in local sport.
What stands out to me every year is the sheer amount of work put in by volunteers – all to run a nonprofit club that exists purely to benefit the children. Every penny raised goes straight back into equipment, facilities, and subsidising fees for families that might struggle to afford club membership. It ensures every child can play, regardless of background.
And yet, as Runpreneur so often observes, it’s the same core group—coaches and a handful of senior players—showing up to help, often giving up entire weekends to make the event happen. All these coaches volunteer their time week after week, not just for the festival, but for training and matches throughout the year. Their hard work and dedication are nothing short of admirable.
But here's the rub: while many parents express strong opinions about team selection and game management, not all step forward to help. Some do—thank you to those parents who pitch in, whether it’s running the barbecue, collecting tickets, or helping clear up. Your efforts make a world of difference.
Imagine, though, if every parent or community member gave just half an hour of their time—picked up litter, manned a stall, or helped set up goals. The workload for the core volunteers would be so much lighter, and the sense of togetherness even stronger. Even some young players joined in this year, which is something I hope to encourage more of next time. This is their club, after all, and it’s important for them to take ownership and give back.
This isn’t a rant, but a reminder—that when we all contribute a little, we create a thriving environment for our children, make life easier for the volunteers, and strengthen our community spirit.
So if you’re part of any club, group, or event, ask yourself: are you doing your bit? It doesn’t have to be much—a small commitment from each of us adds up to something monumental. Let’s embody the principle that many hands truly do make light work, and ensure these community initiatives can thrive for years to come.
And don’t forget, this blog is part of my ongoing fundraising effort to save children’s lives through my barefoot ultra running challenge. The more support, the more lives we touch.
Stay positive, stay happy, and I’ll see you next time!
