For most of my 1,874 consecutive days running, I never properly stretched—ever. Not before, not after. Sounds reckless? Maybe. But it’s the truth. The minimum daily run? 5k. Average? 7.5k. That’s over 25,000 km from London to Melbourne, without any elaborate pre- or post-run routine.
Somehow, I powered through injuries and fatigue—the secret? Listening to my body. If I wasn’t feeling it, I’d take it slow, letting the first few kilometres act as a gentle, dynamic warm-up. No static stretching, no frantic lunges. Just a gradual build-up to pace.
But here’s the catch: as I’ve edged into my 40s (now 43), my body’s started sending me different signals. Mornings are stiffer. Mobility takes longer to return. And after a pesky hamstring tear skiing last winter, I’ve realised it’s time for something new.
Why I’ve Finally Started Stretching—And Why You Should Consider It Too
So what’s changed? For the past 3–6 months, I’ve introduced a simple daily routine: 20 seconds stretching each calf, now each hamstring too (especially after that stubborn hamstring injury). Guess what? For the first time in ages, I’m feeling less stiff in the mornings. The improvement is noticeable—even after just a week.
Is stretching the magic bullet? The evidence is mixed—some say you don’t need it, others swear by it. Personally, I got away without stretching in my 30s. But now, I’m convinced age does matter. Recovery slows down, and the aches linger longer.
Many veteran runners I know are hooked on Pilates or yoga and swear it’s revolutionised their running—especially over 40.
My Honest Advice for Runners of All Ages
Under 40? You might get away without formal stretching if you listen to your body and pace smartly.
Over 40? Stretching—even just a few seconds for key muscle groups—could be a game-changer for recovery and fighting stiffness.
Training for races? Prioritise your recovery—stretching matters.
Stretching doesn’t have to be a long, tedious session. Even a few minutes could make a world of difference.
