What would YOU do if you weren’t scared? Seriously close your eyes for a moment, imagine your biggest dream or next big move…and picture what happens if fear isn’t in the room. Feels different, doesn’t it?
Welcome back, Runpreneur community! I’m Kevin Brittain, and as I lace up for another day on this epic journey over 1,888 consecutive days, on track to eclipse 4,292 days, 40,075 km, and £1,000,000 raised for children’s causes I’m tackling the emotion that holds more people back than anything else: FEAR.
Why Fear Controls Us (But Doesn’t Have To)
Let’s get real for a second: fear isn’t the villain it’s human evolution. Back in the caveman days, fear kept us alive, acting as our early-warning system against lions, wild animals or anything that threatened us. But the truth is, in modern life, that same instinct isn’t protecting us from sabre-toothed tigers it’s stopping us from growing, trying, risking, and ACHIEVING.
I battle fear every single day. Yes, me! Whether it’s the pressure to keep running this extraordinary challenge, the financial stress of a huge fundraising target, or just the everyday anxieties most people face, that voice of doubt is LOUD. But here’s the secret: you’re amplifying reality. Fear magnifies the possible consequences far beyond what’s likely to actually happen.
The Breakthrough Question You MUST Ask
This is the absolute game-changer I picked up from “Who Moved My Cheese?” (legendary book worth a read). When you feel that tight knot of anxiety, stop. Breathe. And ask yourself:
What would I do if I wasn’t scared?
Nine times out of ten, the answer staring back at you is exactly what you should do. Fear just wants you to freeze, give up, retreat to “safety.” But imagine how your life changes when you act on what you truly want instead of letting fear make the decisions for you!
Turning Fear Into Your Superpower
Here’s how I handle fear, day in, day out:
Recognise fear for what it is an emotion, not reality.
Assess the real stakes: Is this actually life or death? Or am I just uncomfortable?
Ask the magic question: What would I do if I wasn’t scared?
Act with courage anyway, trusting that the reality is far less severe than your mind’s worst-case scenario.
If you want happiness, health, success, or even to join me on this journey to save children's lives, you’ll have to face fear head-on. The people who push through the ones who act despite fear are the ones who end up achieving their dreams.
