Exploring Apple Vision Pro: The Future of Productivity
Hello Readers,
Welcome back to another instalment of my ongoing journey as a Runpreneur. Today, I want to delve into my experiences with the Apple Vision Pro. Specifically, I'll discuss its potential as a productivity tool. As many of you know, I’m always on the lookout for tech innovations that can enhance my productivity and streamline my business activities. So, after having the Apple Vision Pro for a while now, I decided it's time to share my thoughts.
The Exciting Potential and Glitchy Reality
To put things in perspective right away: the potential of the Apple Vision Pro is phenomenal, but the current reality is a bit glitchy. So, has it enhanced my productivity and business activities? Well, the answer is both yes and no.
Lack of Apps and Basic Tools
One of the major frustrations I’ve encountered is the lack of business-focused apps and software tools. Many of the applications I regularly use on other devices haven't been optimized for the Apple Vision Pro yet. In most cases, I'm left to use the iPad versions, which work okay, but there are always those scenarios where things don’t run as seamlessly as they should.
In Apple’s defense, they’ve already rolled out one software update since I got the device, and they’re likely to continue enhancing it. So, I have high hopes for future iterations and updates.
A Game-Changer: The Virtual Workspace
One of the standout features of the Apple Vision Pro is the ability to create an almost unlimited virtual workspace. Imagine the days of juggling multiple internet windows and tabs being behind you! You can position apps and screens all around your physical environment, which is a game-changer for multitasking.
I stretch these virtual screens across a full 180-degree view, and sometimes even layer them. It’s a massive productivity boost to have everything I need right in front of me, provided I remember where I've positioned each virtual screen. The absence of a feature to summarize all open screens gets a bit tricky, but I’m hopeful this will be added in future updates.
Collaborative Magic with Zoom Meetings
One feature that’s taken my collaborative work to the next level is the ability to have multiple windows open during Zoom meetings. You can interact in a Zoom meeting while referencing several different windows at the same time. The AI Persona feature, although a bit freaky at first, has become an integral part of my online meetings. While it’s clear that the Persona is AI-generated, it’s strikingly similar to the real person, which helps maintain a sense of presence in the meeting.
Limitations and Glitches
As with any new technology, there are limitations. For instance, your choices for internet browsers are limited to Safari and a bespoke browser called Lens. While Lens is optimized for the Apple Vision Pro, it doesn’t yet offer all the features you might be used to with Chrome or other browsers.
Moreover, I've encountered some issues with iCloud syncing across devices, presumably due to compatibility problems. These are minor setbacks, but during high-focus work sessions, they can become quite distracting.
Enhancing Focus and Deep Work
One of the most immersive features of the Apple Vision Pro is its ability to facilitate focused, deep work sessions. Whether I’m in pass-through mode, allowing me to see my physical surroundings, or in a fully immersive environment, the ability to tune out distractions has been invaluable. However, this comes with a caveat: using the device for extended periods can lead to eye fatigue and discomfort due to the weight of the headset.
Practical Considerations and Final Thoughts
For extended typing, I'll be honest, the virtual keyboard is not practical. A magic keyboard is a must-have accessory and, if you already own a desktop Mac, you can post a Bluetooth keyboard across, which is pretty cool.
Despite the kinks, I don’t regret investing in the Apple Vision Pro. It’s already proven to be a highly useful tool, and I’m enthusiastic about what future updates will bring.
