Recently, whilst ploughing through day 1,881 of my challenge, I found myself drowning in endless goals, business plans, and to-do lists. Sound familiar? That’s the world we live in: more opportunities, more distractions, more overwhelm. But halfway through Greg McKeown’s “Essentialism”, I had a wake-up call. The message was simple: Do only what’s essential. Cut out everything else.
It’s so obvious, yet so easy to ignore. I realised I was proud to call myself a “serial entrepreneur” with multiple businesses property portfolio, software consultancy, a cafe, meal prep company, charity work… but the truth is, spreading myself so thin was diluting my impact. If you’ve been juggling too many things, let me tell you: less really can be more.
How Essentialism Changed My Strategy And Cut My Stress in Half
After reading the book, I sat down, took a hard look at my strategic plans. Instead of a separate plan for each business, I brought them all under one roof. Suddenly, my priorities became crystal clear. By focusing on one strategic blueprint, I drilled down to what really matters, rather than being lost in a sea of minor goals and distractions.
The big shift? I paused my ambitious growth targets for the software side, because let’s be honest it wasn’t essential right now. That one decision instantly halved my workload. The best part: I’m still serving existing clients, but now I’ve got space to grow more strategically in future, on my terms.
Why You Need Essentialism In Your Life
If your mind is racing with “what’s next?”, or your calendar is packed full and you’ve lost sight of why you’re doing all this, take a breath. Essentialism isn’t just a philosophy it’s a superpower. By learning to say no to what isn’t vital, you remove stress, anxiety, and that constant feeling of being “behind”.
Trust me, I’ve read countless books on productivity, the 80/20 rule, Pareto’s Law… yet Greg McKeown’s “Essentialism” hit home hardest. If you truly absorb that principle, your whole approach to life and work will change.
