Now, let’s dive into today’s topic.
Introduction to the Yucca App
For those who haven't heard of it, Yucca, or Yuka, is an app available on iOS and possibly Android, that assesses the nutritional quality of food products. Whether it's international or just UK-based, I’m not entirely sure, but it has certainly made a substantial impact on my diet.
The Struggle with Eating Habits
Maintaining a healthy diet has always been a challenge for me, particularly because I am a pescatarian. When I’m not eating fish or eggs, I often resort to processed protein sources. The issue with processed foods is that they are frequently laden with artificial additives, sugar, and salt all the things your body craves but doesn’t need.
Over the years, I’ve improved my meal planning: I start my day with low-sugar granola-based cereals or sourdough and eggs. For dinner, I rely on The Foodie, a local meal prep and delivery service that provides me with balanced, frozen meals that are easy to heat up. However, my Achilles' heel has always been snacking.
Snacking Wisely with Yucca
Surprisingly unhealthy foods often sneak into our diets. Even something as seemingly innocent as nuts can be problematic because they are frequently coated with sugar or salt. This is where Yucca has been a lifesaver for me. By scanning the barcode of any food item, the app gives it a score from 0 to 100, accompanied by a traffic light scale indicating the food’s quality from bad to great.
Finding out which snacks contain lower levels of sugar and salt has never been easier. For instance, I used to enjoy instant noodles, but they’re packed with unhealthy flavorings and salt. Thanks to Yucca, I discovered Itsu instant noodles, a much healthier alternative that I now regularly enjoy.
Making Healthier Choices
Integrating Yucca into my life for just a week has already led me to rethink and refine my food choices. I drink a lot of water, mint tea, and black coffee to avoid consuming empty calories. With these changes, I’m starting to feel a more balanced nutritional intake, which is pivotal for my ultramarathon training and overall well-being.
Final Thoughts
Eating healthily can undoubtedly be a chore, but tools like Yucca can make it much more manageable. Any system, app, or routine that helps you make better choices is worth trying. While I’m far from perfect, I’m on a much better path. If 95% of my diet consists of good food, I know I’ll be in a better state to tackle daily life, sports, and exercise.
I hope you find this insight helpful. Remember, I’m not affiliated with Yucca in any way; I’m just sharing something that’s working for me. As always, thank you for your support.
