Dealing with setbacks is the subject of episode 2,118, day 2,118 of my daily run streak. I ran barefoot-style as always and recorded the vlog on the move. The idea came from a conversation with a close friend. He leans pessimistic. In passing, he told me life is full of disappointment, and he left the sentence there.
He is right. He missed the second half. Life is full of disappointment, and how we deal with disappointment decides how fulfilled our life becomes.
I have setbacks in business, in money and in life. I have the same number as everybody. When one lands, my first thought is usually "why me?" This reaction is emotional and irrational. Left alone, the thought pushes my state of mind somewhere negative, and a negative state of mind stalls forward movement. Some people freeze completely.
I do not trust my first reaction. I notice the thought, then I move on to the second one.
The first thing I accept is simple. Setbacks are part of every day life. They show up in careers, finances, health and family. Expecting a life without them means every one knocks me flat. Accepting them removes the surprise.
Anyone who runs marathons or ultras hears the same question. How do you finish? The answer is plain. You put one step in front of the other, then repeat. Distance does not change the answer. A marathon, an ultra and a lap of the world all follow the same method.
Applied to setbacks, direction matters more than speed. You might take a detour. You might change the original route. A detour is fine, as long as each step still points towards where you need to be. I do not need a straight road. I need to keep moving in the right direction.
An oche is the line you stand behind when you throw a dart. The distance between the oche and the dartboard is the distance between the throw and the target. For me, this is the journey of problem solving, so I use the word as an acronym.
O is for opportunity. I frame the setback as an opportunity to solve and to grow. This shifts my mindset straight away.
C is for controllable. I ask what I control in this situation and I focus only on this. Anything outside my control gets no energy.
H is for have a plan. Once I know what I control, I write a plan for those parts only.
E is for emotion. I remove it. Emotion masks reality. Negative emotion does the most damage, but I remove all of it so I see the situation as it is.
Take a plan falling through as an example. The old reaction is to replay what went wrong. The OCHE reaction is to ask what the situation offers, list the parts I control, write the next step for each and leave the feelings out of the decision. Not every setback gets solved quickly. The framework makes sure I respond rather than react.
A streak rehearses this skill. Some days are cold, some days I am tired, some days the schedule is full. Each of those is a small setback with a small decision attached. I do not negotiate. I take the next step. Over 2,118 days, the habit of moving forward stops being a decision and becomes a default. I want the same default when a larger problem arrives.
I run daily towards 40,075km, one lap of the world. Today's total stands at 16,282.77km, with 23,792.23km remaining. The run and the vlog are part of a fundraiser with a target of £1M for children's causes. The more people who watch, the more we raise, and the more children's lives we help to save.
A project of this length guarantees setbacks. Over 2,118 days I have not had 2,118 easy days. Some days my body is flat. Some days my mind is elsewhere. The streak survives because I do not wait for a perfect day. Consistency beats intensity when the finish line sits 23,792.23km away.
- Accept setbacks first. They belong to every life. - Have a framework ready before the setback arrives. - Focus on the controllable and give the rest no energy. - Keep moving forwards, even when the route changes.
If you face a setback right now, ask which part you control and write down one step. Then take it. Tell me your own method in the comments. If you believe in the mission, watch the full episode, subscribe and share. Every extra viewer helps us raise more for children. I will be out again tomorrow for day 2,119.
