Day 1 in Rural Germany: Exploring the Northern Coast
Welcome back to my daily diary! Today marks consecutive day 1153 of my journey documenting life as a Runpreneur, and I'm thrilled to share insights from our first day of our German vacation. This trip is set against the stunning backdrop of rural Germany, specifically the northern coast, just outside the small town of Schönberg.
Our journey here has been nothing short of an adventure. For starters, we're staying in a fascinating loft of a converted barn through Airbnb. Imagine a place filled with quirky charms like a hammock and a swing right in the middle of the living space. For the kids, it's like living in an adventure playground, and they couldn't be happier. Our hosts have been incredibly friendly, and they even have lovely farmland with animals, which further adds to the rustic charm of our stay.
I embarked on a run along the coastline, and the scenery is breathtaking. Though it's not much of a beach, its beauty is undeniable. We were bracing ourselves for a week of rain, but the sun graced us with its presence, making my run all the more enjoyable. Running here in rural Germany offers a unique perspective—people are very friendly, perhaps even more so than in the cities.
Driving has been an interesting experience. We've hired a car, which means adjusting to left-hand drive as opposed to the right-hand drive back in the UK. Initially, it felt like everything was the other way around—gear stick and handbrake on the opposite side, though thankfully the pedals remain in the same order. While driving in rural areas is relatively straightforward, navigating city traffic can be quite the challenge. However, so far (touch wood), we've had no major issues.
Even though we've only just arrived, our first impressions have been overwhelmingly positive. We spent yesterday evening settling in after a long day of traveling, but today, we plan to explore some of the other beaches and soak in more of the local scenery. My run this morning already introduced me to some beautiful spots that I can’t wait to revisit with the kids.
One heartwarming sight during my run was a man sitting in the boot of his car, looking out to the sea with a table and his coffee. It’s such a simple yet cool way of living that epitomizes the serenity of this place.
Day one has taught me an important lesson: whenever you visit new places, make the effort to explore. Running has been a fantastic way for me to discover hidden gems along the coastline, which we can further explore as a family. Too often, people stick to their resorts and miss out on the rich tapestry of experiences a new place has to offer. So, my advice is to get out and experience the local culture as much as you can.
