Are you secretly convinced that all those years of training have granted you immunity from injury? Think again! I’m living proof that even after 1,800+ consecutive days of barefoot run vlogging, age sneaks up on all of us no matter how fit, strong, or committed you are.
Hello, Kevin Brittain here yes, the Runpreneur on a mission to smash the 4,292-Day Challenge, rack up a jaw-dropping 40,075 km, and raise an epic £1,000,000 for children’s charities! But today, I want to get real about something most of us ignore: the undeniable correlation between age and injury.
The Runpreneur Truth: Fit, Strong, and Injured?
Every day, I push my limits to help save lives, raising money for the causes that matter through the ultimate run vlogging ultra-marathon. Yet, at 43, I have to admit I’m not as bulletproof as I used to think. You see, the older I get, the more those little niggles rear their ugly heads. Sound familiar? Whether you’re a regular runner, gym-goer, or weekend football star, you might be noticing it too.
You’d imagine that consistent exercise would keep injuries at bay. Sure, it helps: fitter, stronger, healthier those things are all true. But let’s get brutally honest. Age doesn’t care about your training regime.
Real Talk: My Own Injury Struggles
Recently, a seemingly minor ligament strain in my ankle from an off-road 10K not even a competitive sprint has lingered for weeks now. More telling still, messing about with the kids caused another twinge! Ten years ago, trampoline sessions were a breeze. Now? I get anxious about bouncing too hard and doing myself a mischief.
And it’s not just me. Mates who dominated at football in their youth now pull hamstrings simply striking the ball. These moments are sobering reminders: joints, ligaments and bones weaken with age, no matter how hard we train.
Training Hard ≠ Total Protection
Listen up, midlife athletes and forever fit-fiends! We tend to believe our years of effort grant us a shield against injury. The truth is, high-intensity life just increases exposure to different movements and that can be risky. Yes, activities like yoga, Pilates, and swimming are gentler. But even these don't offer full immunity.
So what’s the lesson here? Be mindful. The little things jumping on a trampoline, spontaneous games with the kids are often what catch you out, not necessarily the activities you’re best prepared for.
Mindful Movement: Protect Yourself as You Age
No matter how much I train, I’m not invincible. If you’re pushing yourself daily or just want to keep enjoying the things you love, remember:
Age increases proneness to injury even if you’re strong and fit.
Injuries often come from unusual activities, not your main sport.
Recovery takes longer the older you get.
So take a breath. Think twice before launching into those spontaneous adventures. Respect your body’s signals.
