What if I told you that the key to true happiness and fulfilment isn’t how much you own or how much you achieve – but how you cope when life throws curveballs your way? Stay with me; this insight could transform the way you handle everything from major victories to those inevitable setbacks.
My Runpreneur Challenge: Beyond Day 4,292 – Running 40,075 km to Raise £1,000,000 for Children’s Causes
If you’d asked me what keeps me lacing up my shoes every single day, rain or shine, barefoot or not, the answer isn’t just the thrill of the run. It’s my mission: raising £1,000,000 for children’s causes by conquering the ultimate ultra-marathon of run vlogging—over 40,075 km, the circumference of the planet, and pushing past day 4,292!
The Statement That Changed Everything
During one of my daily runs, a business colleague shared a profound truth:
The people who live the most fulfilled lives are those that cope the best.
Initially, it sounded bleak – isn’t fulfilment about joy, not just “coping”? But it struck me hard. Every life, no matter how glamorous or enviable it appears, is a journey through ups and downs (just like my marathon mission!). It’s not the avoidance of hardship, but how you manage your thunderstorms and your sunny days that determine fulfilment.
Life Isn’t Just Highs (Or Lows)
As I pounded the pavements, dodging unpredictable horses (tip: always wear inconspicuous colours!), I reflected on advice from my old mentor, Mark Homer. He told me:
What feels “amazing” isn’t as good as it seems;
What seems “disastrous” isn’t as bad as you fear.
Humans are emotionally reactive. We amplify our wins and catastrophise our setbacks. But what if you could taper these reactions and keep perspective? That’s real coping—and that’s where fulfilment grows.
My Coping Acronym: OKIE
The world will throw challenges at you relentlessly. How you respond makes all the difference. I use my own system called OKIE:
O = Opportunity. Every problem or success is an opportunity—to grow, to learn, to move forward.
K (actually C for Control, but it works for memory!) = Control. Only spend your energy on what you can actually influence. Don’t let anxiety steal your focus with “what-ifs”.
I = Initiative. Have a plan. Once you know what you can control, take actionable steps to resolve it.
E = Emotion. Remove unnecessary emotion. Stress and panic cloud judgement. Instead, approach the situation calmly and rationally.
Running, nature, and my daily vlog are my therapy. Reflecting, unloading feelings, and sharing them openly keeps my mental health strong and my perspective balanced.
Why Coping Well = Fulfilment
I’ve learnt that everyone faces highs and lows. It’s how you deal with adversity, and how you keep your feet on the ground during triumph, that defines fulfilment. The happiest, most successful people don’t get carried away in good times, nor do they sink in bad times. They achieve a balance that allows them to keep moving forward, appreciating every step of the journey.
Your Challenge: Can You Cope With Life’s Ups and Downs?
Whether you’re facing your personal marathon, tackling business hurdles, or just getting through a tough week—remember, fulfilment comes from how you cope. Reframe your challenges as opportunities, focus on what you can control, have a plan, and master your emotions. You’ll be amazed by how much happier and more successful you feel.
