Running On Empty – Coping with Exhaustion During a Run
If You’ve Ever Had NOTHING Left in the Tank… You Need to Read This.
Have you ever stared at your trainers, running kit on, and wondered: How am I supposed to move when I’ve got nothing left to give? Well, let me take you behind the scenes of day 1,726 of the Runpreneur Challenge—a journey that tests the limits of physical and mental endurance, all in the name of raising £1,000,000 for children’s causes.
Pushing Through Absolute Empty
Today’s post isn’t about epic sprints or smashing personal bests. No, today’s episode is about the kind of day where just putting one foot in front of the other feels impossible. I’m writing from Arinsal, in the stunning Andorran mountains, halfway through a family skiing holiday—my ultimate break away and, truth be told, my favourite. But mixing a ski trip with my running streak is, quite simply, brutal.
Imagine this: you’ve just spent the entire day skiing—your legs battered, your energy shot, the altitude sapping every last drop of oxygen. Then, because the Runpreneur Challenge waits for no one, you lace up for yet another run. This is my fourth out of six (maybe seven) runs on this trip, and honestly, my tank is completely drained.
Why I DO This, Even When “Don’t” Is the Sensible Answer
I’ve committed to not just any running streak, but a relentless, consecutive day journey around the world’s circumference—yes, 40,075km, aiming for 4,292 days and determined to raise £1,000,000 for children’s causes. This is bigger than I. Every day I run, vlog, and share, I’m doing it to give children a lifeline.
And trust me—days like this hurt.
How to Run When You’ve Got Nothing Left
If you’re here because you’re pushing your own limits, here’s what I’ve learnt from running on empty:
Be honest with yourself. If you don’t need to run on those exhaustive days (especially during intense holidays or after physical strain), don’t. Your body needs and deserves rest.
Adapt your expectations. If you must run (like me, because of a streak or a challenge), slow it down—really slow.
Focus on the fundamentals: Stay hydrated, take it extra easy, and let caution take the lead. Injury and illness risk skyrocket when you’re worn out and at altitude.
Forget the pace: Just move forward. Even if you feel like you’re “hitting the wall” before you start, remind yourself: One foot. Then the other. That’s all that counts.
Why Showing Vulnerability Is as Powerful as Showing Strength
Today’s run took every ounce of willpower. There was no energy, no fuel—just resolve. But it’s days like these that prove: even if I’ve got nothing left, I’ll keep showing up. Not just for the streak or my own pride, but for the children whose lives we can change—together.
