Let’s get real: the last 7 days before your marathon matter more than almost any long run on your training plan. Here’s exactly what I’m doing one week out – and why you should pay attention, whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned marathoner.
You’ve probably heard, “Never try anything new on race day.” I’m saying, never wait until the last week to test kit, food, or even socks!
Here’s the raw truth: this week, I experienced it myself. I’ve worn Vibram Five Fingers for years. Yet, with a brand-new pair (and the same trusted Injinji and Hilly socks), I suddenly faced a problem. The socks slid under the heel, causing friction. A tiny annoyance? Maybe today – but over 26.2 miles, it’s the sort of niggle that can destroy your day, leaving you limping, blistered, or unable to finish. Imagine failing because of something as silly as a slippy sock. That’s why, with only seven days left, I’m experimenting with longer socks and resisting the urge to change shoes last-minute, which would only make things worse.
Your take-away: One week out is the absolute latest to resolve ANY gear, nutrition, or comfort issues…and, yes, that includes your socks!
Energy gels, sweets, anti-chafe lube, medical bits, and your running kit – if you haven’t bought, tested, and packed these by now, you’re flirting with disaster. I always say: be almost fully packed a week out. Online orders are still possible, but don’t push your luck. Leave it too late (three-four days pre-race), and Amazon may let you down. You’ll be forced to run to the shops, wasting time and mental energy you could use for recovery and prep.
Injury or self-doubt? Trust me – I nearly didn’t sign up for this marathon due to ongoing niggles. Even so, I’ve got my sports massage booked for tomorrow, my final check before toeing the start line. After all these days running back-to-back, I’ve learned that mental doubt is as much a threat as any physical pain.
Prepare with confidence:
Stick to what you know.
Test any last-minute tweaks now, not later.
Don’t let uncertainty creep in and derail you mid-race.
By one week out, your training’s done, your kit should be sorted, your nutrition mapped. That feeling of readiness, of organisation, is your greatest weapon against “what if?” anxiety. Don’t risk your race to last-minute faff – whether it’s forgotten gels, untied shoes, or a dodgy pair of socks (I know this lesson intimately!).
Every day I lace up is another chance to inspire, raise awareness, and drive donations to save children’s lives. The more I share my journey and hard-earned lessons, the more we save. That’s the heart of the Runpreneur Challenge – and why your support counts.
My goal: go beyond day 4,292, run 40,075km, raise £1,000,000 for children. Will you help me?
